GERLIER, Pierre-Marie - Lot 95
GERLIER, Pierre-Marie (1880 - 1965) Cardinal, archbishop of Lyon, major figure of the French Catholic Church in the XXᵉ century. Typed letter signed "+ Pierre-Marie Cardinal Gerlier, archbishop of Lyon". Lyon, March 26, 1963. 1 page in-4, printed letterhead with ecclesiastical arms. Letter addressed to a correspondent about Émile Littré, in which Cardinal Gerlier courteously declines a request for a contribution or testimony. After expressing his wish to "respond to your request and send you a text concerning Émile Littré", he explains that he is unable to do so due to a lack of direct knowledge: "although I have, in fact, known Sophie Littré a little, I have not known Émile Littré himself at all". He adds that he is not in a position "to add anything of interest to the texts that have already been supplied to you on his subject", concluding with a formula imbued with cordiality and deference. This letter illustrates Cardinal Gerlier's intellectual prudence and honesty, careful not to intervene outside his field of knowledge, while also bearing witness to the intellectual and religious networks surrounding Littré's memory in the XXᵉ century.
