GARNIER, Jules - Lot 90
GARNIER, Jules (Saint-Étienne, 1839 - 1904) French engineer, explorer, historian and ethnologist. Autograph letter signed "J. Garnier", addressed to Madame Liouville. S.l., n.d. 1 ½ page in-12. Bill of an amiable, worldly nature, in which Jules Garnier invites his correspondent to a concert: "Allow me to offer you a ticket for next Sunday's concert, whose program is the same as last Sunday's. I hope you will be able to enjoy it. I hope you will be able to enjoy it. This short letter bears witness to the sociability customs in cultivated circles at the end of the XIXᵉ century, where invitations and exchanges of courtesy accompanied personal relationships. Of particular interest is the signature of Jules Garnier, a mining engineer in New Caledonia, discoverer of garnierite - an important nickel ore - and a key player in the development of its industrial exploitation. Parallel to his scientific career, Garnier was also an active writer and member of the Société de Géographie de Paris. A modest document, but representative of the relational networks of a XIXᵉ century scientist-explorer.
