GARNIER, Jules - Lot 89
GARNIER, Jules (Saint-Étienne, 1839 - 1904) French engineer, explorer, historian and ethnologist. Autograph letter signed "Jules Garnier", addressed to "Madame". Paris, March 23, 1882. 1 page in-12. Short bill of a friendly, worldly nature, in which Jules Garnier offers his correspondent "two places at the Conservatoire", expressing the hope that she will be able to take advantage of them. This letter, simple in content, illustrates the sociability customs in scientific and cultivated circles at the end of the XIXᵉ century, where invitations and exchanges of courtesy accompanied personal relationships. It takes on a special significance in view of the personality of its author, a mining engineer in New Caledonia, discoverer of a major nickel ore - garnierite - and player in the development of its industrial exploitation. Garnier was also a man of letters and an active member of the Société de Géographie de Paris. A modest but interesting document, with the signature of an engineer-explorer associated with a major scientific discovery of the XIXᵉ century.
