FREYCINET (Charles-Louis de Saulces de) - Lot 85
FREYCINET (Charles-Louis de Saulces de) Foix, 1828 - 1923 Engineer, statesman and major figure of the Third Republic. A graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique, he played a key role in the development of France's infrastructure (Freycinet plan) and was President of the French Council four times between 1879 and 1892. Autograph letter signed "C. de Freycinet" to a comrade Paris, n.d. (December 22) 1 page (fragment) in-8. Interesting letter on Parisian scientific life, in which Freycinet mentions the presentation of a paper to the Académie des Sciences: "I was unable to present your interesting paper to the Académie des Sciences on Monday... but he intends to present it next Monday... either by me or by M. Bertrand...". This bill testifies to Freycinet's active role in the scholarly circles of his time, at the interface between science, engineering and academic institutions, alongside his high political office. The reference to "M. Bertrand" most probably refers to Joseph Bertrand, an influential mathematician and perpetual secretary of the Académie des Sciences. Good condition.
