EECKE (Paul Louis Ver, known as Paul Ver Eecke). - Lot 77
EECKE (Paul Louis Ver, known as Paul Ver Eecke). Born in Menin (Belgium) in 1867 - died in 1959. Mining engineer and historian of mathematics. His French translations of the works of Archimedes, Pappus of Alexandria and Theodosius of Tripoli are still authoritative. Autograph letter signed "Paul Ver Eecke", addressed to Bernard Grasset. Antwerp, July 18, 1938. 1 page in-4. Enclosed is Bernard Grasset's typed reply, dated August 10, 1938. Interesting scholarly letter on the history of translation. Following his reading of the article "Traductions et traducteurs" published by Grasset in the Revue des Deux Mondes, Ver Eecke provides a number of historical and critical clarifications. He points out that the fundamental principles of translation had been formulated long before Goethe, notably by Étienne Dolet (La manière de bien traduire d'une langue en autre) and Jacques Peletier du Mans (Art poétique français, Lyon, 1555). He also discusses the work of Frédéric Hennebert on the history of French translations of Greek and Latin authors in the 16th and 17th centuries. Secondly, the author mentions his own editorial work and announces the dispatch of a prospectus relating to his latest work, recently launched by his publishers, whose previous volumes can be consulted at the Bibliothèque nationale. Finally, he points out the high cost of these publications, despite his disinterest in copyright. A fine letter illustrating the philological and editorial debates surrounding the translation of ancient texts at the beginning of the 20th century.
