DURUY (Victor) - Lot 76
DURUY (Victor) 1811 - 1894 French politician and historian. Minister of Public Instruction under the Second Empire. P.S. "V. Duruy". Paris, October 3, 1866. 1 page in-4. Stamp on paper with the arms of the Empire, printed letterhead of the Ministère de l'Instruction publique. Official document signed by Victor Duruy in the performance of his ministerial duties, concerning public education. This is a certificate of aptitude for the grade of Bachelier ès Lettres, awarded to a Parisian candidate on August 23, 1866, and signed by the Minister and the relevant administrative officials. The document is printed on official paper with the imperial seal, and bears the official government endorsements. A typical example of how the university system functioned under the Second Empire, this document illustrates the central role played by the Ministry in awarding degrees and structuring higher education at a time of far-reaching educational reforms led by Duruy.
