DUPANLOUP (Félix) - Lot 73
DUPANLOUP (Félix) Saint-Félix, 1802 - Paris, 1878 Autograph letter signed "+ Félix, Évêque d'Orléans" to a Minister Versailles, July 10, 1871 1 page in-8, on blue paper, printed "Évêché d'Orléans" letterhead, dry stamp. Interesting letter from Félix Dupanloup, a leading figure in 19th-century French episcopacy, addressed to a minister in the aftermath of the events of 1870-1871. In it, the Bishop of Orléans passes on a letter received from a parish priest in his diocese, whom he describes as "very intelligent, and very well-intentioned", and which he deems worthy enough to be brought to the attention of his correspondent: "It seems to me that I have nothing better to do than to place before your eyes the enclosed letter..." The tone is both respectful and committed, revealing the role of intermediary and influence that Dupanloup intends to play with the political powers that be. He concludes by relaying the thanks of the correspondent mentioned ("Mgr de la Hailandière") and adding his own, in a formula imbued with deference: "... I am entrusted to offer you all his thanks, and I hasten to add my own. Autograph signature: "+ Félix, Évêque d'Orléans". A renowned orator and feared polemicist, Dupanloup was one of the leading defenders of educational freedom in the 19th century. Bishop of Orléans from 1849, he played a leading role in the religious and political debates of his time, notably around the Falloux law (1850) and the tensions between the Church and liberal currents. As a member of the French National Assembly, he was influential on the major educational and religious issues of the period. A fine piece, characteristic of Dupanloup's episcopal and political activity in the troubled post-Commune years, combining spiritual authority and intervention in public affairs.
