DUPANLOUP (Félix Antoine Philibert). - Lot 72
DUPANLOUP (Félix Antoine Philibert). Born in Saint-Félix (Haute-Savoie), 1802 - died in 1878. Bishop of Orléans, leading preacher and churchman during the Second Empire and early IIIᵉ Republic. Member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed "† Félix, évêque d'Orléans", addressed to a minister. No place [Orléans], no date [ca. 1870-1872]. 2 pages in-4 on "Assemblée nationale" printed letterhead. Important letter concerning public education issues following the upheavals of 1870. In it, Dupanloup discusses the consequences of the war and administrative reorganization for elementary school in his diocese. He is particularly concerned about the fate of teachers, whose salaries depend on municipal councils, and asks for details on the number of schools "since September 4, 1870", as well as on municipal subsidies that may have been withdrawn. In a spirit that is both pastoral and political, he questions the government on the measures taken to ensure the enforcement of school laws, and highlights the difficulties encountered locally. The letter concludes with a respectful formula addressed to the minister, followed by his episcopal signature. A significant document illustrating Dupanloup's involvement in debates on teaching and the role of the Church in education, at a pivotal moment in French institutional history.
