DUCHESNE (Mgr Charles-Émile) (probable attribution) - Lot 69
DUCHESNE (Mgr Charles-Émile) (probable attribution) French prelate, archbishop of Besançon in the second half of the XIXᵉ century. Autograph letter signed to a correspondent ("Cher et vénéré"). Besançon, October 24, 1883 4 pages in-8 (2 leaves), on headed paper printed "Archevêché de Besançon", folded. Long, interesting letter of a personal and pastoral tone, in which the archbishop thanks his correspondent for "your good letter and the good wishes it brings me", while evoking the demands of his "official duties" that are taking up so much of his time. The tone, imbued with affection and trust, gives way to a more intimate reflection: he evokes the faithful friendship of his interlocutor, whom he has recognized for many years, and indulges in a meditation on the human condition, the "trials" and "concerns" weighing on contemporary society. The author stresses the need not to be blinded by appearances, and insists on the persistence of moral and social difficulties, while expressing a measured form of hope: "in spite of everything, something is working...". The second part of the letter develops these considerations in a free, spontaneous style, blending personal observations, religious concerns and encouragement, revealing a prelate engaged in the debates of his time and attentive to developments in the modern world. Good condition, with wear creases.
