LAW - Lot 68
LAW [LAW THESIS - BOURGES]. DEO OPT. MAX. VIRGINIQUE MATRI. Ad consequendam in utroque jure licentiatum lauream. Typescript, Bourges (Bituriges), June 6, 1789. Imprimerie de Bartholomaeus Cristo, imprimeur de l'Académie. 1 folio sheet (approx. 45 x 35 cm), printed on two columns with framing and ornate lettering. Rare and interesting plate from a thesis in civil and canon law, defended in 1789, on the eve of the revolutionary upheavals. The text, entirely in Latin, presents a series of legal positions relating in particular to: - company law (Societas et contractus), - obligations and responsibilities, - ecclesiastical revenues (Census), - the rights and prerogatives of religious and civil authorities. The defense was held "in publico J.U. auditorio" under the chairmanship of Henricus Franciscus Xavier Haslay, with mention of academic witnesses, according to the university custom of the Ancien Régime. Fine late 18th-century typography, with engraved initials and layout characteristic of university posters. Condition: Sheet handled, small accidents to corners, marginal marks and soiling, old folds, with no noticeable loss to text.
