DELESSERT (Benjamin, baron) - Lot 64
DELESSERT (Benjamin, baron) Born Lyon, 1773 - died 1847. Naturalist, industrialist, financier and philanthropist. Baron d'Empire. He contributed to the growth of the sugar industry by developing a method for extracting sugar from beet, and in 1818 founded the Caisses d'épargne in France. Autograph letter, addressed to Mrs. Lawlen, in English. [S.l., n.d.] [January 1]. 1 page in-8. Inscription. Trace of red wax seal. Short courtesy letter in which Delessert presents his compliments to his correspondent and raises a question of correspondence: he indicates that he has promised Wilkins not to part with his original letters, while expressing his willingness to send copies if she so wishes. A simple yet revealing document on epistolary exchanges and the circulation of manuscripts and copies in cultivated and international circles in the early 19th century.
