DACIER (Bon-Joseph) - Lot 59
DACIER (Bon-Joseph) Born in Valognes in 1742 - died in 1833. Man of letters, perpetual secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed "Dacier", addressed to Monsieur Renouard. Paris and Louvres, December 30, 1824. 2/3 page in-8 on headed paper printed "Bibliothèque du Roi" with arms. Interesting letter concerning the consultation and reproduction of a document held in the Bibliothèque royale. Dacier is responding to a request from publisher Antoine-Auguste Renouard for a copy of a letter from Queen Christine. He indicated that he had forwarded the request to Abbé Lespine, the Library's administrator at the time, and emphasized the interest of the piece: "...I am convinced that an appreciator as enlightened as you are, of the value of such a precious object, will neglect none of the precautions necessary to preserve it intact...". The document illustrates access to public collections in the early 19th century, between administrative authorizations, conservation concerns and the circulation of scholarly sources. It also bears witness to relations between scholars, librarians and publishers in the world of historical and literary studies. Autograph signature.
