CVIJIĆ, Jovan (1865-1927) - Lot 58
CVIJIĆ, Jovan (1865-1927) Serbian geographer, geologist and ethnologist. Founder of modern karst geomorphology, president of the Royal Serbian Academy of Sciences, rector of Belgrade University, honorary professor at the Sorbonne and major intellectual player in Balkan issues during the Great War. L.A.S. signed "Jovan Cvijić", addressed to Monsieur le Vice-Recteur de la Sorbonne, 1 page in-8, Paris, 3 Square Lagarde, December 11, 1917. Very interesting letter of recommendation written in French, in the context of Franco-Serbian cooperation during the First World War. Cvijić recommends to the Vice-Rector the request of M. Fontenaille, president of a Franco-Serbian association, wishing to organize a patriotic demonstration at the Sorbonne around the motto: "il faut tenir et jusqu'à la victoire intégrale". He added that he knew the young organizers as : "very intelligent and enterprising". and expressed his confidence that the demonstration "at the Sorbonne will be a great success". A historically significant piece, combining Parisian university history, Franco-Serbian relations and wartime intellectual propaganda.
