COWLEY (Henry, Charles Wellesley, Earl, Lord) - Lot 54
COWLEY (Henry, Charles Wellesley, Earl, Lord) Born in London, 1804 - died in 1884. British diplomat, English ambassador to Paris from 1852 to 1867; the title of "Earl Cowley" was created in his favor in 1857 in the peerage of the United Kingdom. Autograph letter signed "Cowley", in French. Chantilly, December 7 [s.d.]. 1 page 1/3 in-8. Charming letter of invitation to a hunting trip in the Halatte forest, near Chantilly and Apremont: "Voulez-vous venir avec votre fusil demain. I dare not say to hunt, because I cannot assure you that there will be game...". He sets a rendezvous "at the Salle au Vau d'Apremont at half past eleven". This bill, both courteous and slightly ironic in tone, illustrates the social practices and aristocratic leisure activities of the Second Empire, while also testifying to the use of French as a language of diplomacy and sociability in international circles.
