CITTADELLA (Jean-Marie). - Lot 42
CITTADELLA (Jean-Marie). [CORSICA - GENDARMERIE]. CITTADELLA (Jean-Marie). Born in Vico (Corsica), 1756-1836. French magistrate, member of the Conseil des Anciens. L.A.S. "Cittadella" to Minister of War Scherer. Paris, s.d. (10 fructidor an VI [27 août 1798]). 1 page 2/3 in-4. Very slight lack of text at the break of the seal. Interesting autograph letter signed by Jean-Marie Cittadella, a Corsican personality and former member of the Conseil des Anciens, addressed to General Barthélemy Louis Joseph Scherer (1747-1804), then Minister of War under the Directoire. The document concerns a gendarmerie affair in Corsica, revolving around the situation of Captain Peraldy, whom the signatory is seeking to have admitted to the island's gendarmerie division. Cittadella emphatically expresses his regret at not having been able to obtain this appointment: "It gave me all the more regret that I see, in spite of myself, this Corps, on which tranquility and good order must depend, deprived of such a good subject". The document sheds a vivid light on the administrative and security stakes in Corsica under the Directoire, at a time when maintaining order on the island remained a particularly sensitive issue for the central powers. The letter takes an almost personal turn when it highlights the precarious situation of the officer recommended: "after having exhausted his youth and consumed his fortune in service [...] he already lacks subsistence, having no pay" A fine play at the crossroads of Corsican history, military administration and the revolutionary gendarmerie, with a strong human dimension. The writing is elegant and well contrasted, and the signature highly decorative. The slight lack at the break of the seal has no real impact on the historical interest of the piece.
