BOUCHARD (Charles, Jacques) - Lot 22
BOUCHARD (Charles, Jacques) Montier-en-Der (Haute-Marne), 1837 - Paris, 1915. French physician, anatomopathologist and biologist, member of the Académie des Sciences. Autograph letter signed "Bouchard" addressed to Henri Le Chatelier. S.l., April 29, 1907. 1 page 1/3 in-8 on mourning paper. Interesting letter addressed to chemist Henri Le Chatelier, concerning an election to the Académie des Sciences. Having attended the "double vote" held at the Académie, Bouchard states that he is so certain of his correspondent's forthcoming election that he considers his own vote to be superfluous. He therefore requested permission to absent himself from the following session to return to Cannes, where he had left his wife: "...I am convinced that your election is certain and that my vote is superfluous...". This brief but significant letter illustrates the practices and internal mechanisms of the Académie des Sciences in the early 20th century, as well as the relationship between two major figures in the French scientific world. Charles Bouchard was a pupil of Jean-Martin Charcot and an important figure in experimental medicine, while Henri Le Chatelier remains famous for the thermodynamic principle that bears his name. Good condition.
