BONET (Paul) - Lot 19
BONET (Paul) Paris, 1889 - 1971. French bookbinder, a major figure in modern bookbinding. L.A.S. signed "Paul Bonet" to a lady, Paris, May 6, 1944, 1 page ¾ in-8, on paper printed with his name and address. Very interesting letter from a professional critic concerning a presentation of bindings at the Salon des Indépendants. Paul Bonet indicates that he has examined his correspondent's showcase and delivers a judgment that is both benevolent and extremely precise: "they are, on the whole, of good quality". before expressing several reservations about the decorative composition and legibility of the title. A particularly interesting passage on the use of letters as decorative motifs: "The use of the letter, as a decorative element, can only be sympathetic to me, but it must be handled with care". He insists on the need to maintain the classic constants of legibility, and recommends transferring the title to the spine of the volume rather than to the folder when it becomes difficult to read. The letter concludes with a rare comparative remark: "your binding (...) on the Tharaud is a little too close to those of Rose Adler". A document of primary interest in the history of modern French bookbinding, bringing together two great names in the art of bookmaking: Paul Bonet and Rose Adler. A very fine trade letter, revealing the aesthetic and technical thinking of the master bookbinder.
