BAUSSET-ROQUEFORT, Louis-François de - Lot 10
BAUSSET-ROQUEFORT, Louis-François de (Pondicherry, 1748 - Paris, 1824) Cardinal, bishop of Alais (now Alès), man of letters, member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed "L.F. év. d'Alais", addressed to a correspondent. Béziers, March 14, 1789. 1 page in-8. Interesting letter written on the eve of the French Revolution, in which Bausset-Roquefort discusses the distribution and reception of a report presented to the States. He announces his forthcoming trip to Montpellier and asks that "some thirty copies of the report I made to the States" be reserved for him. He also asked about the progress of the printing of the "grand compte rendu" and its possible publication in the first days of April. The most remarkable passage concerns the condemnation of a work by the Court of Aids: "it was the first time that a book had been condemned on the basis of the preface and the table of chapters", an observation revealing the political and intellectual tensions of the time. Nonetheless, Bausset emphasized the need to "inflame spirits at election time", thus affirming an acute awareness of the stakes of opinion on the eve of the Estates General. A significant document on the pre-revolutionary climate, combining editorial concerns, dissemination of ideas and strategy of influence.
