AGNEAUX, Charles-Jean-Baptiste d' (known as Dom Devienne) - Lot 2
AGNEAUX, Charles-Jean-Baptiste d' (known as Dom Devienne) (1728 - after 1790) Benedictine monk of the Saint-Maur congregation, historian. Autograph letter signed "Devienne", addressed to a correspondent. Angers, April 1, 1760. 1 page in-4. Interesting letter from Dom Devienne, a Benedictine scholar involved in the historical work of the Saint-Maur congregation, concerning his publishing projects and personal situation. The author speaks frankly of the difficulties associated with his work and its publication, while emphasizing the material conditions necessary for its completion. He reveals a certain weariness in the face of the constraints encountered, but nevertheless affirms his attachment to letters and scholarly work, declaring himself ready to "count on the kindness of those who cultivate and protect letters". This letter is set against the backdrop of the major historiographical undertakings of the Maurist Benedictines in the XVIIIᵉ century, particularly those linked to provincial histories, of which Devienne was a secondary but representative player. It bears witness to the concrete realities of scholarly production under the Ancien Régime: dependence on patrons, slow editorial progress and financial uncertainties. Attached is a printed biographical note on Dom Devienne (d'Agneaux), recalling in particular his involvement in the Histoire de Bordeaux project, the publication of which was delayed by various institutional obstacles. An interesting document for the intellectual and monastic history of the XVIIIᵉ century.
