Asterix in Brittany.
GOSCINNY - UDERZO
Asterix in Brittany.
Dargaud, 1981. In-4 hardback, boards illustrated in color.
1981 reprint of this eighth Asterix adventure album, originally published in 1966. In this masterpiece of national satire, Asterix and Obelix cross the English Channel to help Asterix's cousin Jolitorax repel the Roman legions. Goscinny deploys his genius to parody British phlegm, culinary habits (boiled boar with mint sauce) and English syntax transposed into French.
Uderzo's brushwork here is frighteningly effective, especially in the rugby scenes (the "soule") and the foggy Londinium settings. This album remains one of the best-loved in the series, for its subtle sociological humor.
