Related literature: -June Ellen Hargrove, Gilles Grandjean, Carrier-Belleuse, le Maître de Rodin, cat. exp., Compiègne, Palais de Compiègne, May 22 - October 27, 2014, Paris, RMN, 2014. This bust of a young woman wearing a flowery hat is one of a series of female figures that figured prominently in Carrier-Belleuse's work. Often presented in bust form, magnified as allegories, they are imbued with an evocative melancholy. Here, the purity and simplicity of feeling contrast with the richness of the ornamentation. Trained as a goldsmith, the artist is particularly at ease with the profusion of detail. Most of the time, he creates these refined ornaments in parallel with the general design of the bust, then arranges them before firing. The presence of a blue-glazed tile by the famous ceramist Théodore Deck between the pedestal and the bust marks a friendly collaboration between the two artists.
