MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY SCHOOL - Lot 63
MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY SCHOOL The stagecoach meeting the traveling soldier Oil on canvas H_58.5 cm W_73 cm Our painting displays several characteristics that suggest the work of a French, German or Austrian school. It illustrates a moment of pause during a journey, combining everyday realism with a touch of the exotic. In the center, a yellow travel coach (typical of the 1840s-1860s) is stopped. In the foreground, a young woman dressed in traditional Alpine or Germanic costume serves a drink to the man seated on the left, who, from his attire, appears to be a military man or veteran. The red fez he wears on his head, often associated with colonial troops, is very much in vogue after the North African campaigns. This work is reminiscent of the Biedermeier movement and the works of Carl Spitzweg. Expert : cabinet Artéon
