Jean Louis Demarne (1752/54-1829) Driving the herd Oil on canvas H_26 cm W_39.5 cm Restorations Provenance : Piasa sale, March 27-28, 2008, Lot n°106 (3100€) After two unsuccessful attempts at the Prix de Rome, Demarne abandoned history painting in favor of genre painting, which was very much in vogue at the end of the 18th century. He followed Taunay to Switzerland, whose influence can be seen in some ways in Demarne's figures. His painting is colored by a soft, warm light, often accompanied by beautiful greenery standing out against a blue sky. These characteristics are perfectly reflected in our painting.
