Bernardo Strozzi (1581-1644) Apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernard Oil on canvas H_34.5 cm W_24 cm Faded, restoration report 2005. Our work was exhibited in Genoa, with the cartel on the back. This small painting testifies to the quality of Strozzi's sketches, a pupil of Pietro Sorri. He spent most of his career in Genoa, where he received and assimilated various influences, from Caravaggio to Rubens. His paintings exude a genuine spontaneity, revealing a talent for the instant, direct and masterful, supported by a precisely positioned light and subtly chosen colors. Probably done in preparation for a larger work, now unknown, this sketch is a precious testimony to the painter's compositional work. Expert : cabinet Artéon
