FRENCH SCHOOL OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY - Lot 40
FRENCH SCHOOL OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY French school of the 18th century Virgin and Child slaying the serpent Oil on canvas H_61 cm W_56.7 cm Faded Inscription and date on reverse "N. Chevallier 1797". This painting, probably intended for a private devotional chapel, was inspired by the Madonna and Child by Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1609-1662), known as "Il Panfilo", of which two versions are known today. The first is in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, and the second was sold at Bonhams in London London on December 7, 2022 (lot 63). In our composition, Christ overcomes the serpent, the allegory of evil. He is represented as the New Adam and the Virgin as the New Eve. Triumphant, they both illustrate the dogma of Redemption. It is plausible that the inscription on the back indicates the name of the painter and the date creation date: "N. Chevallier 1797". Expert: Cabinet Artéon
