Antonio Carracci (1583-1618), entourage of - Lot 37
Antonio Carracci (1583-1618), entourage of Christ in the tomb, 1609 Oil on canvas H_79.5 cm W_99.5 cm Faded, restoration report 2005 Bears a date of 1609. This Entombment impresses with its bold colors and dynamic composition. While the drawing seems similar to the compositions of Sisto Badalocchio (1581/1585-1647), notably the Entombment circa 1610 in the Borghese Gallery, the color and modeling are clearly influenced by the Carracci, particularly Antonio. Son of Agostino Carrache, Antonio was probably raised with Badalocchio and began his apprenticeship with his father. When Badalocchio died in 1602, he moved to Uncle Annibale's workshop in Rome. Around 1609, he inherited the family workshop and worked alongside Guido Reni on several major projects, including the Annunciation Chapel in the Quirinal Palace. Expert: Cabinet Artéon
