ZOLA IN THE TRACAS OF THE FEUILLETON PUBLICATION OF HIS ROMANCE "LE RÊVE" IN VARIOUS REVUESHe announces that the review La Vie populaire will be the first to publish Le Rêve, but he agrees ...very willingly to allow you to publish it afterwards for a thousand francs. But I don't know if La Vie populaire will agree to let Lecture begin publication before it has even finished its milk. See Catulle Mendès on the subject. Why don't you wait another month? I would formally undertake to reserve the reproduction for you in the second rank. Nothing could be easier, unless the December 10 date is imposed on you for some serious reason. In any case, please see to it that this matter is settled, and I'll be very happy to do so... Emile Zola's novel Le Rêve, the sixteenth volume of his Les Rougon-Macquart cycle, was published in 1888. In it, Zola tackles the theme of religion, but in a much less violent and polemical way than he did in La Conquête de Plassans or La Faute de l'abbé Mouret. This time, he focuses on popular faith and the revival of mysticism in French society in the second half of the 19th century.
