...You ask me (...) to edify you on the talent and works of Mr Pître-Chevalier your relative..., whose works he deems it unnecessary to recall here, limiting himself to saying: ...considering the whole of his works, I must tell you that they are those of a firm and laborious mind and an excellent writer. That an extensive and patient erudition has been the basis of his historical works, which are the most important of his writings. That feelings of honor and enlightened patriotism, a scholarly observation of the country, a thorough knowledge of ancient chronicles and current events nourish with a strong and healthy substance this great and lasting work on Brittany and its inhabitants (...). I believe that this double history of Brittany and the Vendée will remain among our good historical monuments, and the author's character, his serious and honorable life, as well as his relatively young age, are a sure guarantee of the excellent works that will follow (...). Believe me, Monsieur, it is not friendship that I am listening to here, but justice, as is appropriate in such matters, and I have endeavored to moderate rather than exaggerate the good I think of the author and his works...
