VIGNY (Alfred de) Born in Loches. 1797-1863. Romantic poet. Autograph poem. S.l.n.d. (circa 1820-1825). 1 p. in-8 Very fine working manuscript with a few erasures: this is an (unfinished) ballad composed of three stanzas of eight lines each, which can be dated in the poet's handwriting to circa 1820/25. The subject is borrowed from the Romancero du Cid : ...At the banquet of the brave of Spain / Pelaïs enters, he has blushed / For in the bloody campaign / Everyone knows he has done wrong / The Cid without disdain, without anger / Takes him, leads him a few paces / Near a solitary table / And speaks to him softly Mangeons, that I accompany you, / Neither you nor I have acquired / The meal of the brave of Spain / It's their glory that conquered it / Let's take this Escabelle, / This place is good for us, / Though my fortune is fine, / I'm no better than you. But all those with whom Alvor surrounds himself / Are strong and fearless demons, / At this table of bravery / No one sits without his honor / At the bottom of an enemy's place / That's where the blood must be drawn...
