The Duke of Dalmatia advises M. Louis Jean-Baptiste Vallantin of the promotions ordered by Louis-Philippe I: ...I inform you, Sir, that the King has appointed you by order of June 26 to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Engineers. I am delighted to be able to announce to you this honourable token of His Majesty's satisfaction! While awaiting the dispatch of your brevet, you will wear the distinctive marks of your new rank, and you will enjoy the salary assigned to it... (July 1831) - ...I wish to inform you, Sir, that by the King's Order dated 23rd of this month, you have been promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Corps Royal du Génie. You will bear the distinctive marks of this rank, and you will enjoy the salary assigned to it, as from the day you set out to go to the new destination which will soon be assigned to you... (November 27, 1840) - ...Colonel, I inform you that the King, in accordance with the proposal I made to him, has conferred on you, by decision of the 12th of the Current, the duties of Director of Fortifications at Perpignan.You will consequently make arrangements to go as soon as possible to your new destination. You will hand over the engineering department to the officer designated for this purpose by the Director of Fortifications in St. Omer... (December 26, 1840)The Duke of Dalmatia contributed significantly to the victory of the Battle of Austerlitz (1805), and was Minister of War under the July Monarchy. He was appointed Peer of France in 1815 and 1827. He subsequently established the Foreign Legion (1831). In 1847, he was awarded the unique title of "Marshal General of France" by King Louis-Philippe. Louis Jean-Baptiste Vallantin was Colonel of the French Engineers from 1782 to 1856.
