SAND (George) (Aurore Lucile Dupin, Baroness Dudevant, known - Lot 204
SAND (George) (Aurore Lucile Dupin, Baroness Dudevant, known as). Born in Paris. 1804-1876. French writer. L.A.S. "George" [to publisher Félix Bonnaire]. S.l.n.d. [Paris, early January 1835]. 3/4 page in-8. Dry stamp. Charming bill from George Sand to the future publisher of her OEUVRES COMPLÈTES: ...A la bonne heure, voilà ce qui s'appelle un Editeur. Decidedly Buloz is a butor, he didn't give me a praline. But I have one reproach to make to you, and that's that you didn't bring the sweets yourself... Son of Baron Bonnaire (a deputy from Cher, friend of Fouché, Prefect of the Empire), Pierre-Félix, with the help of his two brothers, used their father's fortune to ensure Buloz's launch of the Revue des Deux Mondes in 1832. But it was as co-director of the Revue de Paris that he published the first French edition of the "OEuvres complètes de George Sand" (27 volumes between 1837 and 1842). As for François Buloz (b. 1803), he made a name for himself with the spectacular transformation of a small, moribund magazine into one of the most famous of its time: La Revue des Deux Mondes. Buloz was to play a major role in French literature for almost forty years. Having attracted George Sand as early as 1832, he published numerous novels by her, before a falling-out that lasted many years. However, George Sand would go on to publish some thirty novels in Buloz's magazine, as well as a host of short stories, travelogues, articles and comedies. ANCIENNE COLLECTION JEAN DEPRUNEAUX: bibliophile Jean Depruneaux's great-grandfather had known George Sand in La Châtre. Jean was an ardent defender of Berry and of the author of "Lélia", Sand's first novel written in La Châtre. Making La Châtre the novelist's second home after Nohant, he created a museum in his own home, a 15th-century dungeon that he restored to house his collections of letters, manuscripts and portraits of George Sand. Bibliography: Correspondance, Tome II, no. 873.
