SAND (George) - Lot 203
SAND (George) Born in Paris. 1804-1876. Novelist, playwright, letter-writer and literary critic. L.A.S. "G Sand" to Clément Renoux. S.l. [Palaiseau], August 12 [18]64. 1 p. in-8. George Sand, in response to Clément Renoux, who would like her to intervene with publisher Michel Lévy to publish her manuscript, states ...Mr. Michel Lévy is not in Paris. As soon as I know he's back, I'll present him with your request, but without flattering myself with a credit I don't have. It doesn't matter. I'll do what I can. George Sand had already recommended a novel by Renoux, "Homme très pauvre", in 1860. Is this the "Terrible" novel Sand refers to in a later letter to Noël Parfait, Lévy's right-hand man? Clément Renoux had been recommended to G. Sand by Jules Favre in February 1860, and had even made the trip to Palaiseau, where Sand lived, on July 6, 1864. At the time, George Sand was very worried about the health of her grandson Marc (known as Cocoton), who was to die of illness on July 21.
