ROUMANILLE (Joseph). - Lot 195
ROUMANILLE (Joseph). Born in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. 1818-1891. Provencal poet. L.A.S. "J. Roumanille" to an editor. Avignon, June 2, 1871. 1 p. 3/4 in-8. BELLE LETTRE DE ROUMANILLE, INSTALLÉ LIBRAIRE-ÉDITEUR EN AVIGNON DEPUIS 1855.Il lui annonce avoir confié à Laporte l'article demandé par un courrier précédent: ...Un Coeur, le voilà, Dieudonné! How well this forehead is made to wear a crown (...) it radiates loyalty and honor. This is indeed, Monsieur, the most recent and most successful photograph of Constantinople, the one the King gives in preference to his friends, I know......I have a deposit of the remarkable work entitled Etude politique. I'm expecting the new edition, which has just been published, from Geneva at any moment. (...) I've improvised myself as a merchant photographer (...). To obtain a cost price that would allow me to go ahead, I had to haggle over a large number of them (perhaps too many!). (...) Fortunately, my friends in the Catholic and legitimist press came to my rescue. For the past 10 days, my friend Mr. Laurentie has been holding up a nice ad in his newspaper. I'd be very happy and grateful if you'd do me the courtesy of publishing it in your paper's "faits divers" section. It goes without saying that, in doing so, you would be doing excellent propaganda work... He ends with an allusion to the "Semaine sanglante" which set Paris ablaze (in May 1871), in the form of a prayer: ...May our France, by an ark tossed on waves of blood and oil, soon be worthy of seeing the dove come to bring her the olive branch!...
