PELLICO (Silvio). - Lot 179
PELLICO (Silvio). 1789-1854. Italian poet. L.A.S. "Silvio Pellico" to Chevalier Matthieu Bonafous. S.l., May 16, 1845. 1/2 page in-4 on fine vellum. Inscription. Red wax stamp. Thanks for sending a work, in doubt the Manuel de Droit Ecclésiastique by Ferdinand Walter (1841) and translated from German by A. de Roquemont, Docteur en droit. ...I receive (...) only good things from your hands; Walter's work, which his translator has been kind enough to offer me through you, has, for some years now, won the approval of many men of merit. You tell me that Mr. de Roquemont is in Compiègne, and I shall address my thanks to him there... We must remember the immense success of Pellico's work "Mes Prisons", an account of his years of confinement first under the lead weights of Venice, then in the fortress of Spielberg in Bohemia (today in Moravia). This highly moral work was reprinted more than 150 times in French, in 1833 and 1914.
