MERCADANTE (Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele). - Lot 160
MERCADANTE (Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele). Born in Altamura (Italy). 1795-1870. Italian composer. DIRECTOR OF THE CONSERVATORY OF NAPLES. L.A.S. "Mercadante" to "Très noble chevalier et ami" [Don Vincenzo Capecelatro]. S.l., July 7, 1858. 1 1/2 pages in-8. Address. Remains of stamps (small misses). In Italian (French translation). Mercadante warns that he has received no news from Francesco Florimo (the brother of the addressee of this missive) and will notify his correspondent upon receipt. He takes the opportunity to ask Vicenzo to convey his thanks to his brother Antonio for the interest he has shown in him and his daughter. His early instrumental works won him praise from Rossini, but he soon turned his attention to the theater, composing numerous ballets and operas. His international career took him to Spain, France and Lisbon. Back in Italy in 1839, he was appointed director of the Liceo Musicale in Bologna and choirmaster of San Petronio. The following year, he chose to relinquish these two positions to take up the even more prestigious post of director of the San Sebastiano College in Naples.
