GOUNOD (Charles). - Lot 105
GOUNOD (Charles). Born in Paris. 1818-1893. French composer. First Prix de Rome in 1839. L.A.S. "Charles Gounod" to "Cher bon Jules" [the painter Jules Richomme]. S.l.n.d. [Paris, January 1845]. 1 1/2 pages. In-12. Inscription, remnant of red wax seal. Contariétés au sujet des répétitions d'un concert d'un ouvrage du compositeur Félicien David ...I've just been told that Félicien David is not to interfere in tomorrow's concert because of the debates with the director, and having declared in the newspapers that nothing that would be done in the future at the Italiens about his music was organized by him, I'm told that, by virtue of this quarrel, it is impossible that the friend of his who was to have brought us to the rehearsal today as he did last time will take charge with any hope of success.Vatel alone is at the head of the thing: on the one hand I don't know him, and on the other you immediately assume that if I showed up with you at the theater door as a friend of David's I'd find in the concierge (whose friendliness I've already tested once) a head of Kings who'd tell me from the director: I don't know Mr. Félicien David.I'm really very sorry, my good Jules, to have wasted yet another morning on you. Jules Richomme, son of the engraver Théodore Richomme, was born and died in Paris (1818-1903). Painter, draughtsman and engraver, he painted mainly genre scenes, historical and religious pictures. He shared with Camille Corot the decoration of the chapels of the Virgin and Saint-Nicolas for the Ville d'Avray church. He also designed several church decorations, including Saint-Séverin in Paris. He also made decorations for the town of Cherbourg. His workshop was located in Cité Pigalle, Paris. Throughout his life, Jules Richomme maintained a remarkable correspondence with his friend, the musician Charles Gounod, elements of which were published by his son-in-law André Beaunier.Félicien David was a Romantic-inspired composer, 1810-1879.
