GAVARNI (Sulpice Guillaume CHEVALIER, known as Paul). Born in Paris. 1804-1866. Painter, lithographer, caricaturist. Famous for his lithographs published in L'Artiste, L'Illustration and Le Charivari (satirical journal founded by Philipon in the 1830s, to which the brilliant Honoré Daumier contributed, among other caricaturists). L.A.S. "Gavarni" to Emile Pereire. Auteuil, Wednesday, s.d. 1 p. in-8. In bed since the beginning of the month, Gavarni thanks his correspondent: ...I knew all (sic) you had done to make the council more favorable to me.
