COCTEAU (Jean). - Lot 70
COCTEAU (Jean). Born in Maisons-Laffitte. 1889-1963. Writer, poet, painter, playwright and film-maker. L.A.S. "Your Jean Cocteau" to "My dear friend" [Gaston Palewski]. Paris [36 rue de Montpensier], April 19, 1945. 1 p. in-4. Beautiful letter of support to his friend:...Your pain is, to tell the truth, unbearable for me. I think about it and guess that the person often puts his cheek against the partition wall. That's when your voice should be heard as in the "forty-five". I'd be so good at convincing her! But alas... (...) These few lines are just to reiterate that my heart doesn't move away because you're leaving the Palais Royal, but remains close to you, attentive and faithful... He concludes... As far as my business is concerned, all that's missing is the spark, the order that makes the expected "paper" go to Leclerc. Gaston Palewski (1901-1984) was a French diplomat and politician. During the Second World War, G. Palewski joined the Free French Forces. In 1957, General de Gaulle appointed him French ambassador to Italy. In preparation for the filming of Beauty and the Beast (1946), Jean Cocteau tried to obtain special leave from General Leclerc for Jean Marais, who was mobilized at the time.
