BERTON (Henri-Montan).
Born in Paris. 1767-1844. Violinist and composer. Pupil of Sacchini. Appointed director of music at the Opéra-Italien, he was responsible for the first performance of Mozart's Nozze di Figaro. Succeeded in having Hector Berlioz fail the Prix de Rome 3 times. Autograph manuscript twice signed "H. Berton" (album amicorum pages). S.l.n.d. 2 pp. 1/2 in-4 oblong.
The manuscript consists of an Autograph Poem (1 p.) of 10 rhymed lines: ...Fate did not make you to live under a Master, / and every Husband yet still wants a little to be him. Ah! ressaisir ta Lyre et reprendre tes Crayons ; de ta Céleste voix faire vibrer les doux sons ; par ta Danse légère étonne Terpsichore... and an Autograph Musical Manuscript (1 p. 1/2) entitled "Le Réveille (sic) du Troubadour, canon à 3 voix égales". The score consists of 12 musical staves (treble clef, with flat), under which are the words of the canon: ...Mon Luth dormait, ne pouvait l'accorder. My weak voice no longer dared to prelude...
