BEAUVOIR (Simone de) - Lot 39
BEAUVOIR (Simone de) Born in Paris. 1908-1986. Writer, companion of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. L.A.S. "S. de Beauvoir" to "Cher Monsieur" [M. Chattard]. S.l.n.d. [December 9, 1983]. 2 pp. in-8 on checked paper. Stamped envelope enclosed. Simone de Beauvoir refers her correspondent to Tout compte fait, the last volume of her Memoirs, published in 1972: ...Le Mops was the daughter of Mme Morel and Boudy the daughter of Le Mops - Sorokine, my Russian friend whom I called Lise in my Memoirs - she died in America (see Tout compte fait). Mops lives in Argentina, Boudy in Paris: she's a grandmother... The Countess was, I believe, a white Russian refugee who is surely dead - Mme Morel died some 15 years ago... In an Interview with Sartre by John Gerassi, the philosopher recalls: "Castor [Simone de Beauvoir] recounts in her memoirs that we often went to [Mme Morel's] country house, picnicking with her and her child and friends...". Mme Morel was a close friend of Jean-Paul Sartre in his youth. Sartre and Beauvoir remained close friends throughout their lives. During the Second World War, they often visited La Pouëze in Maine-et-Loire, where the Morels owned a country house. Nathalie Sorokine had been one of Beauvoir's favorite pupils in 1937, when Beauvoir was teaching at the Lycée Molière in Paris.
