Born in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte. 1808-1889. Writer and journalist. L.A.S. "Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly". Paris, March 27, 1874. 1 ½ page in-8. Engraved header with his motto "Never more".
Barbey urges his correspondent to use his influence with a painting jury: ...The list of members of the Painting Jury is published. I don't know a single one of them, but you must know them all; and you have promised me, with that grace which distinguishes you, to place your influences at my disposal & at that of M. G. Lefébure [Gabriel Lefebure, still-life painter, exhibited at the Salon from 1846]. The portrait number is 2677. If you could recommend it enough for it to have a good place, you would make Mr. Lefébure very happy and me, in turn. I have the fatuity to count on you. Kind women make kind men. So do men. It's your fault I am. I'm not for you, believing that a word from you, who, in matters of art, is a Doctor of the Sorbonne, can be decisive...
