ANOUILH (Jean). - Lot 25
ANOUILH (Jean).
Born in Bordeaux. 1910-1987. French playwright and screenwriter. L.A.S. "Jean Anouilh" to "Mademoiselle" [Colette Monceau]. Sanary-sur-Mer, July 10, 1978. 1 page in-4 accompanied by an autograph manuscript. 2 pages in-4, envelope enclosed with postmarks.
Jean Anouilh sends a letter to graphologist Colette Monceau at her request, asking her to analyze his handwriting: ...Thank you for your admiration and especially for your tenderness, which is a rare commodity. You frighten me by wanting to scrutinize my handwriting, God knows what you'll learn about me that I carefully concealed. Finally, at my age, the carrots are cooked... Will this page be enough for you to know who I am? You're lucky to be able to deduce so much from all these little sticks. To help his correspondent refine his analysis, Anouilh enclosed two pages of a working manuscript in which several characters engage in dialogue ("La Petite", "L'Homme", "Léonore"...), and containing numerous didascalies. Colette Monceau, the recipient of this letter, is a graphologist and autograph collector. Throughout her life, she collected autographs in order to analyze the handwriting of personalities from the art world, and devoted herself in particular to Sarah Bernhardt.'
