AMANN (Paul). - Lot 16
AMANN (Paul). Born in Prague. 1884-1958. Austrian writer and translator. During the Second World War, he emigrated to France, then to the United States. In 1915 he had an epistolary relationship with the great Thomas Mann. L. dactyl. S. "Paul Amann" to "Mon cher ami" [the writer Pierre Abraham]. S.l., February 2, 1930. 4 pages in-4. On his return from his trip to Italy, he thanks his recipient for the autographed book the latter sent him. He praises his many talents - ...the painter's and actor's gifts, the scientist's keen eye, the writer's precision and elegance, the man's probity and tenacity... -At the same time, he points out the limits, in his opinion, of the procedure and method adopted by the author, as he analyzes the expressions and physiognomies of eminent figures such as Bismarck. Translator of Romain Rolland, Pierre Abraham (1892-1974) began his career as a critic for newspapers and magazines. He contributed to the magazine Europe from its inception, and published several essays whose novelty and originality were noticed. Attracted by collective work, he led a research team at the Encyclopédie française in 1935. He went on to edit the journal Europe from 1949 to 1974.
