HENRI MOREZ (1922-2017)
HENRI MOREZ (1922-2017) Les joyeux amis avinés, original cartoon, on cardstock. Captioned at bottom: "Are you angry, Charlie... You don't talk to me anymore except at rare intervals?..." Black ink and blue pencil, signed lower right H 23.5 x W 28.5 cm For over twenty years, Henri Morez was a pillar of French press illustration. His pared-down, Sempé-like illustrations graced the pages of Paris Match, Jours de France, Le Figaro Littéraire and Le Pèlerin. Throughout his life, he also devoted himself to painting, as a pupil of Mané-Katz, in a vein tinged with abstraction and surrealism. A friend of Albert Uderzo and Jean-Jacques Sempé, he was also a close friend of René Goscinny, who bought paintings from him. In a letter to him in 1975, Goscinny wrote: "Apart from the love at first sight we had for your painting, it will be good for my standing, because when people ask me: 'Who painted this?', I'll be able to answer: 'It's a friend!
