A set of twelve molded oak chairs with cabriolet backs on corner legs ending in cambered feet. Backs and seats entirely covered with red velvet. H 90,2 x W 49,5 x D 46 cm - H 35 1/2 x W 19 1/2 x D 18 1/8 in. Provenance : Former Colette Aboucaya collection, Paris. Sale " Arts décoratifs du XXe siècle provenant de l'appartement de Madame X. ", Maître François de Ricqlès, Paris, 22 October 1997, lot 31. History: Colette Aboucaya, daughter and niece of industrialists who had made her fortune in Algiers, discovered the creations of Jean Dunand during her visit to the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925. She then decided to call upon the lacquerer and his collaborator, the decorator Gérard Mille, to create the woodwork for the smoking room of her apartment in the rue de Monceau. Following this order, which gave birth to the famous smoking room "Les Palmiers", Mademoiselle Aboucaya had the work continued for some twenty years, creating an interior that is emblematic of the French decorative arts from 1930 to 1960. The dining room, from which our chairs originate, was designed around 1946 by Gérard Mille, under the supervision of Pierre Dunand, one of Jean Dunand's sons. Bibliography: "L'art de vivre", Vogue, September 1961, for a report presenting several photographs of the interior of Mademoiselle Aboucaya.
