NGUYEN VAN BINH (1917 - 2004) "Scene of daily... - Lot 45 - Art Research Paris
NGUYEN VAN BINH (1917 - 2004) "Scene of daily life in a Vietnamese village Polychrome lacquer panel inlaid with eggshell and gold highlights depicting villagers in their traditional costumes, located in a village in northern Vietnam, in the Sapa region. Signed lower right and dated 1992. A lacquer panel signed lower right and dated 1992 H 60 x W 90 cm - H 23 5/8 x W 35 3/8 in. PROVENANCE : This lacquer panel was bought by the present owner in a gallery in Hanoi in 1993 on the occasion of an exhibition devoted to post-war Vietnamese artists. The lacquer panel representing here an old man crouching smoking a pipe, looking benevolently at three young women, one of whom is carrying her child. The village wise man talking with a young hunter, two other men preparing a crossbow whose bamboo arrow must be hardened by fire, represented here with the technique known as "eggshell". A herdsman on a young buffalo, a dog, and chickens complete the setting, giving the feeling of a lively, everyday scene. In an environment of a forest of "flamboyants", we see the traditional houses built on stilts, the roofs of these made of bamboo and tall grass, considered a true manifestation of wealth and social status of this ethnic group. This representation of a village scene is an invitation to share the habits and customs of the Hmong people. A combination of realism and poetry emanates from this work of Nguyen Van Binh.
