By descent to the present owner Nephew of the painter Edmond Dupain (1847 - 1933), Franck Willmann lived with his parents at number 12 of the rue d'Alésia in the 14th arrondissement of Paris In parallel to his studies as an agricultural engineer, he took painting classes at the Académie Libre de la Grande Chaumière until 1946. He then frequented the painters who populated the Montparnasse district. These two small oils on cardboard were given to him just after the war by Sanyu, whom he used to meet with other students at the Grande Chaumière. This lot was described by Mr. Pierre Ansas Sanyu (or Chang Yu) was born on October 14, 1907 in Nanchong, in the Chinese province of Sichuan. His family owned one of the largest silk factories in Sichuan, run by his brother Chang Junmin, 37 years his senior. The latter, recognizing his interest in art, encouraged him and the family's wealth allowed him to devote himself entirely to it. He studied at home, notably calligraphy with Zhao Xi (1877-1938) and painting with his own father. He then studied at the university in Shanghai. In 1919, he went to Japan, and the following year to France. Unlike most contemporary Chinese painters, he decided to settle there. He settled in Montparnasse in the 1920s. He studied in France and became a friend of Henri Matisse. He then moved to Malakoff with his wife. After his divorce, he returned to Paris, in the 14th arrondissement. In 1943, he moved to rue de la Sablière where he lived until his death. In 1966, Sanyu died of gas asphyxiation in his Parisian studio. The artist received no critical acclaim. His works were sold at public auction at the Hôtel Drouot, without list or catalog. The periods of the 30's and 40's are the most fertile for the artist. Imbued with a certain sense of wonder, the painter produced works with peaceful and harmonious tones, figurative representations tinged, over the years, with a certain modernism. He painted nudes on flat areas of color, without too much concern for depth but thanks to a smooth and milky background on which he glided, with great finesse, his brush. His art evolves little by little revealing his brilliance, the influence of the Parisian environment but especially all the power of the lines of his brush.
