Framed. 56 cm x 44,5 cm Note According to the director of the Paradjanov Museum in Yerevan (Armenia), Mr. Zaven Sargsyan, this is the fifth version of the series "Variations on themes by Pinturicchio and Raphael". The other versions with variants are respectively kept at the Pier Paolo Pasolini Foundation in Rome (Italy), the Paradjanov Museum in Yerevan (Armenia), the Armenian Monastery of the Island of Saint Lazarus in Venice (Italy), in a private collection (Paris) and in the Dresden Gallery (Germany) Sergei Paradjanov was a Ukrainian-Armenian film director and artist born in 1924 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He studied art and cinematography in Kiev and began his film career in the 1950s. Paradjanov became famous for his innovative and visually impressive films, which have been considered masterpieces of world cinema. During his career, Paradjanov directed such films as "Horses of Fire" (1965) and "Sayat Nova" (1968), which were critically acclaimed for their unique aesthetic and poetic sensibility. However, his works were often criticized by Soviet authorities for their political content and non-conformist style. As a result, Paradjanov was imprisoned several times and persecuted for his art. Despite this, he continued to create and also worked as an artist and designer as an artist and designer, creating sets and costumes for films and theatrical productions. Paradjanov died in 1990 at the age of 66, but his artistic legacy lives on. His films continue to be studied and admired for their unique visual style, profound symbolism and avant-garde approach to filmmaking. Paradjanov is considered one of the greatest directors of the 20th century, and his work continues to influence future generations of filmmakers and artists. November 1988 in a hotel in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, rue Monge, Sergei who is invited for the first time to Paris, with a delegation of Georgian filmmakers, begins to work every day on the two images assembled from the paintings of Pinturicchio and Raphael, which represent an old man and a young woman/man, "intertwined" ... He had "obtained" the images at the Pompidou Center where the retrospective of films was held, including his own, shot in Georgia, "The Fortress of Sourami". It was his return to the cinema after fifteen years of being banned from filming. As the collage progressed in small steps, each day he asked me to find him feathers and embroidery, lace, then later he found a place in the neighborhood to frame his work when he found it completed ... " I give you this collage which is dedicated to your two sons, Hovnatan and Tigrane, you give me 3,000 francs so that I buy toys for the children in my neighborhood in Tbilisi. I promised to bring them gifts from Paris. Paradjanov has always been for the artistic "barter", considering that the works do not that works of art do not belong to us and should live their own lives. On the last day, Sergei said to me in my ear, after having "monologued" at my side, on the tomb of Tarkovski, in the cemetery of Sainte-Geneviève des Bois, where he absolutely wanted to go before leaving Paris, "... You'll see that this collage will cost a lot of money later and you'll be able to sell it so that a museum exhibits it and then it will help you to make a new film. Works of art must travel... Did you bring the 3,000 francs? I told him yes and "slipped" the money into his hand, discreetly, like a trick. We were surrounded by people, in front of the door of the cemetery, to whom he was saying goodbye, since he was leaving the next morning. Since November 1988 the collage has been at home and few people have actually seen it, the time has come to expose it to as many people as possible. The other variations, with the same motifs, are in Venice, Rome and Yerevan. I would like this work to remain in Paris or France, since it was conceived here. With a recommendation to the buyer, that it could be lent, when there will be an exhibition of Paradjanov's works in France, organized by the Museum of Yerevan.
