Shimizu-gumi (Shimizu Kensetsu Kabushiki-gaisha) is one of Japan's oldest and most important construction firms, producing a large number of monuments and buildings, including the famous Yoyogi stadium designed by Kenzo Tange for the 1964 Summer Olympics. Alongside more traditional or neoclassical public buildings, a modernist trend is clearly emerging, especially for private villas, influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and the European avant-gardes initiated by Antonin Raymond, the Corbusians Maekawa and Sakakura and the achievements of the Bauhaus.
