SEVRES. KING LOUIS-PHILIPPE'S CAPRAIRE SERVICE FOR THE CHÂTEAU DES TUILERIES.
Hard porcelain coffee cup decorated with a frieze of gilded capraires on a midnight-blue ground, white interior. Sèvres mark 1846, underglaze date 43, Château des Tuileries mark in red, gilder's signature "A... 44", other gilder's signature "M [Jean-Louis Moyez]", underglaze painted mark "16 mai 43 S.".
Saucer with same decoration, château des Tuilleries mark, Sèvres 18(?) blue mark, "16 mai 43" green mark.)
Saucer diam. 13.5 cm, H 3 cm.
Cup diameter without handle: 6 cm, H 6.5 cm.
The "capraire" service, named for its decorative motifs, appeared during the First Empire, around 1808. It was subsequently used for royal and imperial services. It is still used today to serve the presidential table at the Elysée Palace.
